Sound science for informed management

The Chesapeake Bay watershed is home to more than 16 million people. Each and every one must share the resources and ecosystem services that the Bay provides, including seafood, recreation, navigation, and simple aesthetics. At that same time, our collective actions have led to a long decline in the health of Chesapeake Bay and the coastal ocean. How can Virginia, the nation, and the world best respond to growing demands on shrinking marine resources?

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) is mandated by the Commonwealth of Virginia to conduct research and provide sound scientific advice concerning the often-contentious issues surrounding use and conservation of marine resources. During our 60-year history, we have developed unique capabilities in people, practices, and infrastructure that allow  us provide the honest, unbiased science and guidance needed to help address the pressing issues facing our rivers, estuaries, coasts, and ocean.
